No, that is not so.  Synagogues did have a chair  reserved for the  speaker, visiting Rabbis, etc.  There is no Jewish tradition of a special chair reserved for Messiah. There is, however, a special chair reserved for Elijah the prophet at each Passover Seder. He is expected to come and announce the coming of Messiah. This may be the point  where the misunderstanding arose. Gentiles unfamiliar with Jewish customs sometimes get things mixed up.
